Cameroon is the largest economy in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC). The country has a diversified economy based on her rich natural resources: oil and gas, aluminium, minerals, agricultural products – coffee, cocoa, cotton, rubber, bananas, oilseed, grains, cassava (manioc, tapioca); livestock; timber. Cameroon’s industries comprise of petroleum production and refining, aluminium production, food processing, light consumer goods, textiles, lumber, ship repair. GDP growth is expected to reach 4.2% this year after reaching 3.5% in 2017 and 4.0% in 2018. The rebound is driven by three factors: an increase in natural gas production, with a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) offshore terminal coming online; and sustained momentum in the construction, industry, housing, and services sectors (World Bank, October 2019).

Natural Rubber

Cameroon’s rubber plantations were established first by the Germans and then by the French. at the beginning of the 20th century. These plantations were located in the Centre, the South and the East provinces. In the 1980's the Cameroonian Government  launched two smallholder rubber development projects partly funded by the World Bank. Two public agro-industries, CDC in the South-West and Hevecam in the South were the technical operators for the implementation of these projects. Today, the main private agro-industrial entities contributing to Cameroon’s rubber are Hevecam (54,000 ha) and Sudcam (45,000 ha), both owned by Halcyon Agri. Major exports destinations are Europe and the U.S..In 2017, the total production of natural rubber in Cameroon reached 53,000 tonnes .
